🟨 AG-lezing: Can Eindhoven achieve the necessary growth in 2035?

About the topic 

Of all regions in the Netherlands, Eindhoven and the surrounding area are growing the fastest economically. As a result, Brainport Eindhoven has also become one of the Mainports of the Netherlands.

Eindhoven expects that an additional 70,000 people will be needed in the Eindhoven region over the next ten years to further shape this economic growth. This translates into 40000 homes. This is not possible without sustainable support supported by the region, for example in the areas of housing, schools, medical care and the necessary infrastructure for mobility.

AG Lezingen organizes a trilogy in which we shine a light on the ambition of the Eindhoven and Brainport region, and how this expansion can take shape. 

This first lecture will be given by Don Murphy (supervisor center Eindhoven). His task is to monitor the urban and architectural quality in the areas and to 'inspire initiators'.

In the lecture, he will discuss the background of the building plans, the densification vision (‘Verdichtingsvisie’) of the city center and the associated timeline. With a focus on the center area of Eindhoven.

In the second reading, the focus will be on the consequences of this planned expansion for, for example, social and socio-economic developments in addition to infrastructure, health care and education.

In the third reading, it will then be considered what this growth means for the MRE (Metropolitan Region Eindhoven).

About the speaker

Don Murphy is, among other things, founder of VMX Architects in Amsterdam, Supervisor of the municipality of Schiphol and Eindhoven.

Don Murphy was born in Ireland and studied architecture at Southbank University in London. Even then, Dutch architecture had his attention. During a field trip to Amsterdam, he fell in love with the city. 

Later he returned to follow the postgraduate study at the Berlage Institute. After obtaining his PhD, he founded VMX Architects. The architectural firm gained fame with projects in The Netherlands and abroad.

Recent and well-known projects in Amsterdam include the bicycle flat for the Central Station and the terminal for General Aviation at Schiphol East. In Eindhoven, his office designed ‘Haasje Over’, the red residential tower of corporation Trudo, which is partly built over skate and BMX hall ‘Area 51’ at Strijp-S.

Over het onderwerp

Van alle regio’s in Nederland groeien Eindhoven en omgeving economisch het hardst. Brainport Eindhoven is daarmee naast Rotterdam en Amsterdam ook een van de Mainports van Nederland geworden.

AG Lezingen organiseert een drieluik waarin we het licht laten schijnen op de ambitie van de regio Eindhoven en Brainport, en hoe deze expansie vorm kan krijgen. 

Deze eerste lezing wordt gegeven door Don Murphy (supervisor centrum Eindhoven). Hij heeft als taak om de stedenbouwkundige en architectonische kwaliteit in de gebieden te bewaken en om 'initiatiefnemers te inspireren'.

In de lezing gaat hij in op de achtergronden van de bouwplannen, op de verdichtingsvisie van de binnenstad en bijbehorende tijdslijn. Met een focus op het centrumgebied van Eindhoven.

In de tweede lezing zal de nadruk liggen op de gevolgen van deze geplande expansie voor bijvoorbeeld maatschappelijke en sociaaleconomische ontwikkelingen naast de infrastructuur, gezondheidszorg en educatie.

In de derde lezing zal dan worden beschouwd wat deze groei betekent voor de MRE (Metropool Regio Eindhoven).

Deze lezing zal in het Engels gehouden worden. 

Over de spreker

Don Murphy is onder andere oprichter van VMX Architects te Amsterdam, Supervisor gemeente Schiphol en Eindhoven.

Hij werd geboren in Ierland en studeerde architectuur aan de Southbank University in Londen. Toen al had de Nederlandse architectuur zijn aandacht. Tijdens een field trip naar Amsterdam werd hij verliefd op de stad. 

Later keerde hij terug, om de postdoctorale studie aan het Berlage Instituut te volgen. Na zijn promotie richtte hij VMX Architects op. Het architectenbureau verwierf bekendheid met projecten in binnen en buitenland.

Recente en bekende projecten in Amsterdam zijn o.a. de fietsflat voor het Centraal Station en de terminal voor General Aviation op Schiphol Oost. In Eindhoven tekende zijn bureau voor Haasje Over, de rode woontoren van corporatie Trudo die deels over skate- en BMX-hal Area 51 op Strijp-S is heen gebouwd.
